Caravaggio's Entombment of Christ
I agree with Benjamin's claim that something is lost when a piece of art is reproduced. If I were to see Caravaggio's "Entombment of Christ" for the first time at a museum, I would be awestruck. Seeing the tremendous size and detail up close would be incredible. Caravaggio never intended for his work to be seen on a screen. The drama of the piece is lost in an online image. You can't feel as if you are in the tomb, seeing it online. However, as a student of the arts, I would never say to burn art history textbooks and take all images off the Internet. Reproduction of art brings it to a wider audience, however one must realize that there is a power in art when seeing an original in person.
