12 || Tom Nguyen || Final Project Proposal
For my final project, I want to investigate street art, more specifically stencils and possibly wheat pasting. Some of my inspiration for this project include the works of Banksy, Miso and Ghost Patrol, Barry Mcgee, Margaret Killgallen and others. Many of these artists are featured in the movie "Exit Through the Gift Shop", a really good movie that everyone should see!

Self Portrait - Lydia 山口
This went through several iterations in my mind...at first I was going to have it contain various objects and images that would reflect myself, and things that are important to me. Then I realized that I didn't want to present myself by what I consume, so I went in a more abstract direction.
Kerry M: Final Project Proposal
For my final project, I plan to paint (with acrylics) both abstract and realistic pieces of self-exploration, focusing primarily on color and expressive brush strokes.
Final Project - Lydia Y
I am going to work with Alex, and possibly Jacob as well to do a photoshoot for the clothing/hats/etc that they are designing. For my final project I am thinking of creating a fashion spread or some way to present their work. I am also open to working with others to showcase their work as well, potentially even doing something involving works from the whole class.

Final project proposal: To create a three-dimensional space that functions as a statement of my individuality by synthesizing works of classical art and design.

Light and Color : Mia
i wanted to play with the transmission and reflection of light mainly inspired by the shape of the coke bottles of which my material alchemy assignment was made, so i made a dress out of this really think plastic like the bottles. the mirrors at top are like the reflection of light slash represent the existence of light as a particle.
Alisa C - Final Project Proposal
My ideas for my final project are still very abstract but I was thinking of combining different techniques and materials we discovered this semester to create a sculpture for the light and color assignment. If there's one thing I feel like I missed out on at Tockwotton, it's to start building something without knowing exactly where I'll end up. So if I don't get a brilliant idea soon, that's something I'm considering very much.
Materials:Christmas lights
Wire, wood?

Emily - Self Portrait and Final Project
I always like to doodle on the sides of my paper during class, so I thought a good way to express myself would be through a giant doodle. In my self portrait, I included all of my favorite things, places, and activities- everything that makes me me.

From pen to paint:
For my final project, I'm currently planning on creating a series of painting based on doodles I've done in classes. For me, these doodles are sort of automatic drawing. They're not something I'm totally conscious of, the just flow. Often they turn into elaborate scenes that take over my notes and are accompanied by bits of writing. They're not something I have ever been worried about messing up on or displaying to people, so they're more experimental and honest than I believe I normally draw.

Katherine James : Final Project Proposal
On my visit to the recycling center about a month ago, I was intrigued by a collection of huge tubes that must have been originally used to store fabric and/or paper. I wanted to find a way to use them at some point, but could never think of something interesting. They reminded me of wind pipes, and somehow also made me think of graphs and waves.
After my spring instillation project, I realized I really liked the idea of building something out of one type of object--using something relatively mundane over and over again to create a work of art.
For my final project, I would like to make a sculpture using these tubes (cut to different lengths), probably in some shape reminiscent of both a funked-out surface area graph and a very complicated wind pipe. This also might make an interesting instillation, though I'm not quite sure how I would attach them to the wall.
Materials:
15-25 tubes (depending on length)
large piece of wood for base (or a wall)
black paint
screws, glue, etc.
NOTE: I realized while this might be an interesting project, the logistics would be tough. I'm thinking about doing a film project reflecting Providence instead.

One idea I am heavily considering for my final project is a work representative of our nation's corporate controlled food industry. Inspired by my belief that food should be organic and locally grown, I would like to create a plant-like sculpture that appears to belong to big business rather than to Earth. The main structure will be made with paper mache, using food advertisements as the paper. The leaves and fruit will bear logos of food companies, also taken from advertisements. The structure will be painted lightly so that the advertisements can still show through. What I hope to achieve is a final piece that makes people regard our current food system as unnatural.
Resources needed:
Resources needed:
- Lots of food advertisements (I can get them while at home for Thanksgiving)
- Wire or toilet paper tubes to create the underlying structure of the paper mache plant
- Paint
- Glue for attaching the leaves
- Possibly a pot to display the structure in.
Animation assignment - Lydia, Emily, Matt
For our project we decided to make a music video. We experimented with the elements of light and movement by mixing elements of dance, city scenes, and glow sticks. This video tells a lot about who we are- the shots of Providence tell about the city we live in and Matt's enthusiasm for being familiar with surroundings, the dance shots show Emily and Lydia's passion for dance, and who doesn't love glowsticks? : ) We played around with both video and stills, and ended up making a stop motion animation for the most part. Hope you enjoy it!
[11] Mary F ; Final Project idea
So far, I have not finalized my idea for my final project, but I have topics in mind. Two weekends ago, I took a bus with other people to New Jersey that was many hours long, and I brought my sketchbook along. While I was observing the scenery outside my window, I realized that every part of our world (at least seen from outside my window) is organized by shapes/outlines. I went into a derive. So my first idea is to make a picture book of the
Textures, patterns, shapes (all parts of a whole) either by taking pictures, drawing (because I prefer pencil over any other medium) or a bit of both.
Different objects I could observe are leaves of trees, rocks, branches (form), stop signs, road signs, bridges, fences, houses…
My second idea is to use pencil, charcoal, and prismacolor to recreate the same drawing. The problem is I do not know if I want to create a drawing from my mind or use a photograph/artwork and I’m not sure what kind/subject to choose one from.
Alisa C - Self Portrait
I figured that the best way to portrait myself wasn't through the use of words, paint or pencils but objects I use daily or that I emotionally hold on to, as well as how I present them. This "shadow box" (or Setzkasten in German) turned out to be ideal: useful for other purposes, mobile and changeable, little but dense, offering many different interpretations...
11::Brady C. Final Project
After working at Tockwotten, I was really inspired by the use of wood and tools to make art. For that reason, I decided that for my final project I wanted to do something that involved the studio again, bat wasn't sure what. Then, one day coming home from the studio, I saw this piece of art attached to a telephone pole- it was a bunch of long skinny pieces of wood attached around a telephone pole in a helical shape that gave the wood movement and shape. I want to do a similar project where I use long, skinny pieces of wood to describe some bigger shape by stringing or nailing them together.

11 | Tom Nguyen | Musical Map/Self Portrait
Music is one of the most important aspects of my life. In order to study the trends in my music listening patterns, I have been keeping track of all the music that I listen to for the past couple of years. This is a timeline/graph/map of my listening trends within the past year. Although potentially embarrassing, it is interesting to looks back and reflect on my good musical decisions in the past and the music that I am not so proud of listening to.

- urban Dictionary
My goal throughout college has been to transition from consumer to producer. In video games, television, and Ancient Greek prose I have made this transition, so for my final project I want to extend this to fashion. My final project will be a mini clothing line called "Ragamuffin," one of my mom's nicknames for me, a name that is dear to me and one that I find especially euphonic. (Since random people have independently come up with a description of my style as "hobo chic/homeless cute," this seems pretty fitting.) For the final project, I will present 3 complete looks. My influences include many Japanese designers (e.g. nozomi ishiguro, tsumori chisato) as well as some more well known western designers (e.g. anna sui, luella) whose clothing captures the playfulness and unashamed exuberance that I want my own clothes to embody.
While I still have some decision-making to do about what exact themes I will explore in my line, I have started to narrow it down to exploring the feminine and delicate, possibly with steampunk elements incorporated. Next semester, once I have more experience, I will make a second line called "Combinatorial Optimization" that will explore versatility in clothing utility through tougher, cyberpunk-inspired aethetics. I am also considering making one look from each line for the final project, since each is such an important part of me (the struggle between Classics and Computer Science, old vs. new, and many other things).
Finally, I am collaborating with Lydia to document my pieces in a fashion spread.
Materials:
fabric (bought, but will probably impulse buy more)
thread and that kind of stuff (got it)sewing machine (obtained)
buttons, ribbon, lace (can never have enough)
Lydia Yamaguchi and her camera (negotiations in progress)
NB: While I have sewn simple skirts, knitted scarves/hats/legwarmers, and hacked together dresses by combining and altering old clothes, I have never made a whole dress or blouse from scratch. It might be foolish to think I can finish 2 or 3 complete looks, but I'm always up for shooting myself in the foot!
Sophia W. Final Project Proposal
Do you know that there are actually many real life superheroes out there? And by that I mean people who have costumes and stalk the night to help the helpless. A while ago, I stumbled upon an old CNN article about in tough economic times, there is an influx of masked, real life superheroes. Then there are also The Real Life Superhero Project , Team Justice, and Superhero Anonymous, and you get the sense that there are those out there who are committed to do good, comic book style.
At the risk of looking even nerdier, I want to create a short graphic novel of sorts ( a few panels) with a story that's based on these guys (although I don't want to connect it directly to them). No, I'm not a comic book or a graphic novel fan, but I've always found the images in them striking. I think it would be interesting to explore the graphic novel style of drawing, and I think it should be a good way to practice light and shadows in drawings.

Sophia W: Self Portrait
What makes up my life? In a very superficial way, the things that I own can be one way of seeing what makes up a piece of my daily life. Therefore, I basically took an inventory of sort with the things in my dorm room - text books, pencils, hand sanitizer, everything - and use (the names) of those things to make a portrait of me. And somehow, I end up looking sleepy in this portrait.

my self-portrait assignment is kind of in the works. i decided to design an outfit based on one of my favorite pictures of my parents when they were young. right now the design is in the sketch stage, but my plan is to make it over thanksgiving break. the design and the sketch are going to be the designs for me in my final design series project.

My idea for my final project came to me in sort of an epiphany. When I realized that my design inspiration comes mostly from the personal styles of others, I knew I wanted to include our VISA class, which has just been so awesome as in I’m basically in love with everyone. So, what I plan to do is take the photos I took of everyone and produce from each photograph a design sketch for our very our VISA10 LookBook. So there’ll be 19 sketches, and I hope to make 3-5 of the pieces in the sketches.

For my final project, I want to make a series of instillations. I am thinking about making a series of pillows/beds from plaster. Inspired by the spanish word "ausencia," which is an absence or lacking, kind of like an impression in a bed, I will use zip-lock filled with plaster to make pillows with different impressions in them. I want to leave the pillows around campus and photograph them.

plaster

plastic bags
things i want impressions of (hands, bodies, etc.)

Lydia Y- more material alchemy
With all the beautiful fall leaves still around, I couldn't resist...
I just made these for fun, but I think its material alchemy-esque. Its just leaves, tied with thin string.
I wish I could take credit for the idea, but I saw the instructions online (I think on http://www.instructables.com/, but I can't find the actual project) and decided to try it out. Hopefully they'll also dry well!

Nine || Coffee Table || Tom Nguyen
I've always personally felt that coffee tables were one of the most important pieces in a room. It ties everything together and stimulates conversation between people around it (with different things on top of it). Although the table looks very simple, it took very specific calculations and also included a couple recalculations as I ran into various problems (screws crossing, etc). However, all in all, the project was important for me to develop my skills with some of the tools in the workshop and get used to working in a new medium.

Kerry M: Material Alchemy
For the first part of my material alchemy project, I made a Native American halloween costume out of a dress I found at Salvation Army. For the second part, I built a sculpture out of a wooden log to try to explore the disparity between the interior and exterior of the material, and what it might look like for the raw, textured inside of the log to be freed to come outward. I was interested in the interaction between the interior and exterior of something (or someone) in general, and how these two parts, though different, are continuously relating, forming and depending on each other in a very fluid way to form the whole, which I tried to express through the wave-like motion of the sculpture.
nine: Brady C:: material alchemy: wood
here's what I built after a lot of time in the workshop and not really much of an idea of how things were going to come together until the end. i like that i can look at it from any angle and see something different.

For my material alchemy project, I started out working on my halloween costume. I made a Meg costume (Meg from Hercules, the Disney movie : ) picture below if you need a reminder of your childhood)
Then I when I finished my costume, I tried wood carving. I just played around with it a bit and ended up making a heart.

Papier mache => ceramic
Cardboard tube from aluminum roll and thin cardboard and rando fabric => tiny hat (this is not really material alchemy, but it's something I made at tockwotton)
newsprint and staples and tape => dress (apologies for the camwhore pic but none of my roommates are home)
The dress was an attempt to give the newsprint life and see how I could take advantage of the stiffness of paper, which ended up making beautiful ruffles. Unfortunately I accidentally stomped on and crinkled these a few times :< Then I tried to make a bodice for the top part and all my attempts totally sucked, so I just made a simple band and stuck a bow on it (surprise). The project was kind of a failure and did not work out at all as I had expected, but luckily bows fix everything. amirite? ... guys?

Well I started out making a crown for Emily's birthday, inspired by the autumnal atmosphere (and the materials available at the time...):
That transitioned into costume making:
| "Starry Night" |
I built off the dress, which I found at a second hand shop. At first I wanted to go with something water-y, but then found a lot of cool materials that reminded me more of stars and decided to go with a night sky look (also inspired from when I made the paper stars for the paper assignment). And the sash does light up.
I wanted to try out wood working, so I started experimenting with some of the tools and ended up making some cool patterns...and I really like colored markers/highlighters in general, so I decided to add a touch of a different medium to the wood. And...
There you have it! It was exciting to experiment with different mediums and see what happened. It was also really cool & inspirational to watch everyone else work!
