What is art?

When most people respond to this question, perhaps the first image that comes to mind is an art palette and brush. Art for them is painting, or drawing, of figures and representations of real objects or of the imagination created on canvas or walls (murals). But for me, art implies not only the artwork itself, but also the historical context, the culture, ideas, and aspects of identity fused together: I consider designs created on lattes at Starbucks art (second image), cave paintings as art (third image), music – dance – theatre as art, and perhaps even language as art. But many times, as in the third image, art conveys a message set during a certain time frame and may also shed light on the culture of those who created the artwork. Cave paintings like this horse represent a group of people who were nomads who possibly relied on hunting and domesticated horses to travel. Therefore, art does not only represent beauty but also teaches a lesson to even the future individuals who wish to learn of the past through analyzing art.
